In the beginning based on need, Peggy was making her own wigs and hairpieces. She created the first highlight with silver thread and a bobby pin. She also fashioned an add-on piece of hair which fit into her own - the first extension? Her fascination with hair as a child, her own hair loss and a lot of experimentation led to the Peggy Knight Solution for Hair Loss.
Her first design was a "fringe benefit scarf." This was a bandana to cover the head with a fringe of hair along the edge. It served a purpose and reflected the need for comfort.
As a founding member of NAAF and a contributor to the wig section of their newsletter, she quickly found that most salons and manufacturers focused on the needs of men with male patterned baldness. Not only were her hair needs unmet, but no one seemed to understand the emotional impact of hair loss on women.
Peggy decided a change was needed. She decided to take matters into her own hands. She started her wig business, operating out of a bedroom in her home. Soon her client list, as well as her knowledge grew. There was more to do.
She became a member of an organization for wig manufacturers and retailers and asked a lot of questions. "Why do most wigs have so much hair?" It seems that it is easier to manufacture a thick wig than it is to manufacture a thinner more natural looking wig.
"Why weren´t wigs for children being made?" The market for children was too small.
As usual, Peggy was not satisfied with these answers.
Her first step into the hair replacement business came when she received a call from the founder of NAAF who told her about the "Rolls Royce" of hairpieces,a hairpiece that stayed on your head with suction. This was a big change from tape or elastic.
She found out more about this life-changing innovation on a trip to Europe. As soon as she had her new hair styled and it did not come off in a wind storm, she knew this was the answer. She set out to tell everyone in need of her new discovery.
Today, 25 years later, her company, Peggy Knight Solutions (PKS) dominates the women´s hair market.
Peggy says:
"We have never taken our eyes off the woman´s special needs in hair. We focus on customer service and you can always be assured that someone will know first hand your concerns."
