Burns & ScarsHair loss on tissue that is badly burned or scarred has long been thought to be permanent, but a recent discovery in the field of cell research brings hope that new skin and hair may be grown some day from adult stem cells. Cell biologists at Howard Hughes Medical Instititute and The Rockefeller University in New York have not only identified such stem cells deep in the hair follicles of mice; they have also managed to isolate these cells and multiply them in a laboratory. And, as reported in the September 3, 2004, issue of the scientific journal Cell, when they grafted these cells onto bald mice, they grew both skin and tufts of hair.
